He said the HEC has approved the courses of the four-year program and “this year we have enrolled 25 students in B.Ed (honors) for which a test was held under Education Testing and Evaluation Authority.” Dr. Wazim said that out of the total number of students enrolled the first 15 were being given fully funded scholarship, which would cover their admission and boarding charges. He said the provincial government had been taken on board to take it as a top agenda in order to recruit all the trained teachers of B.Ed (honors) elementary in grade 16 and 17, respectively.

Prof Dr Mehmood Hassan, former vice-chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University, said producing well-trained teachers at the primary level was need of time “because we need to give strong building blocks to the nation.” “We talk about giving universal education to our offspring and youth but it is very depressing to know that 30 percent of the kids admitted in the primary schools drop out by class III and more than 50 percent drop out by class 10,” he said.

Prof Dr Sara Safdar said she was grateful to the HEC for approving the course and USAID for providing financial support to the program. “We must enlighten our younger generation with modern education and build their characters so that they cannot be exploited by elements who want to bring unrest in this part of the world,” she said, adding that they were providing trained faculty for this program and would ensure best facilities to the students. The B.Ed (honors) consists of eight semesters and the university also intends to launch M.Ed. (honors) and exclusive MS in education in near future.
