Quaid-i-Azam University ceremony for MSc merit scholarships

Quaid-i-Azam University’s Vice-Chancellor Dr. M Masoom Yasinzai has asked the old students of the university to help the new graduates in job placement and creating better work conditions for them.

Addressing a ceremony for distribution of MSc merit scholarships to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd position holders here on Monday, the VC said that Quaideen, the members of QAU Alumni Association, should help the fresh graduates of their alma mater in finding jobs and at least strive for creating better job conditions for their junior colleagues hailing from QAU. He said that the university is going to establish an incubation centre to impart training to passing out students to increase their practical expertise in their respective fields, which will enable them to get the jobs in the market relatively easy.

The University distributed scholarships worth Rs58 million in 2009-10. These scholarships were awarded to more than 3,000 students under 23 different scholarship programmes. Dr. Yasinzai awarded scholarship cheques worth Rs2 million among 175 students on the occasion.

He also urged the alumni to find scholarships for the poor students of QAU as in the coming days, the public-sector universities will be forced to increase fees to meet their daily expenses in the wake of drastic budgetary cuts announced by the Higher Education Commission after the slashing of educational budget by the financial wizards of the country.

He exhorted the students to focus on the studies but do not become bookworms and also participate in extra-curricular and other healthy activities. He said that the federal capital alone has 13 universities competing with QAU in the public sector. He hoped that QAU, which is number one amongst all the public-sector universities in the country will retain the title with the help of faculty and students.

Addressing the gathering President of Quaideen, Sikander Rai, congratulating the award winners, recalled his years in the university in the late 1970s and said that Dr. Kaneez Yousuf and Dr. Yasinzai both are liberal and broadminded vice-chancellors
