Another School Blown Up

The sources said that a group of about 50 militants entered Government Boys High School at Malakana in the Nawagai subdivision and planted devices at separate points in the building. The militants, the sources added, later came out of the building and detonated the devices that partially damaged rooms, offices, and veranda.

The number of schools so far destroyed in Bajaur rose to 71, depriving thousands of students of education. Educational institutions, it may be added, had remained shut because of winter vacation in the areas where peace prevailed or where the situation was still volatile. “The militants have intensified sabotage activities in the area in a bid to force the security forces to stop the ongoing operation in Bajaur tribal region,” the sources said.

Meanwhile, the security forces carried out search operation in Shago area of Khar subdivision and Umari area of Mamond tehsil and apprehended 12 suspected militants. A huge cache of arms and ammunition including Kalashnikov rifles, and bomb-making gadgets were also recovered from their possession.

The sources said that security forces also heavily shelled suspected hideouts of militants in different areas of Mamond tehsil. Reports said that many militants were killed and a number of their hideouts were destroyed in the action, but it could not be confirmed by independent sources. Also, the political administration and Salarzai Lashkar in a joint action defused a bomb planted by militants on roadside in Raghagan area of Khar tehsil.
